Last issue, i wrote a Letter bemoaning the fact that at that particuLar point in time (October 28, to be precise), with a presidential election looming and the global markets about to tank, it seemed almost impossible to predict anything about the future. Well, here we are in late November, and while the jury is still out on whether or not the economy is only pretty screwed up or fully fucked, we can at least congratulate ourselves on the fact that, whether or not he turns out to be competent or just damn charismatic, we had the courage as a nation to elect an African American and demonstrate to the world at large that we are not exclusively a nation of fat, retarded bigots.

Anyway, that’s enough talk of a future uncertain; let’s return to the world of hard rock and heavy metal, a place not immune to the occasional mishap—witness Deftones bassist Chi Cheng’s recent severe injury in a freak car accident (our thoughts are with him and his family)—but one where we can at least project with reasonable certainty what new albums we can look forward to hearing in the year to come. In this issue, we’ve assembled a preview of the most anticipated releases scheduled for the 2009 calendar year and spoken to the artists responsible for actually writing and delivering them. And if their enthusiasm for their works-in-progress is any indication, we have a good time in store for us.
