WHY YOU SHOULD CARE Frank Iero’s first role in Leathermouth wasn’t as frontman: When the My Chemical Romance guitarist heard the New Jersey hardcore band’s demo, he envisioned signing them to his label Skeleton Crew. After the original singer split, though, Iero told guitarist Rob Hughes (an old pal from the East Coast basement-show scene) to give him a week to write an album’s worth of lyrics. “I forced my way in,” Iero admits with a laugh. On their blistering debut, XO (Epitaph), Leathermouth sound like a furious blast from the not-so-distant past; fans of early-’90s DIY acts like Antioch Arrow are advised to check out horror-inspired gems such as “Bodysnatchers 4 Ever.”
songwriting, Iero says that in Leathermouth his goal is to vent “the hate and frustrations that bubble up inside.” (“You can all go fuck yourselves,” he announces in “My Lovenote Has Gone Flat.”) “This record probably sets back tolerance at least 20 years,” Iero says. “But I’m sick of people being so goddamned politically correct. Everyone has emotions they’re not happy about—let’s tackle them head on.”

I DON’T LOVE YOU Iero initially wanted to keep his membership in Leathermouth a secret but decided to reveal the truth in order to get XO out as speedily as possible. (Playing in goth-punk’s biggest band tends to limit one’s spare time.) Still, he’s not looking for day-job spillover. “If a kid who likes My Chem checks out Leathermouth they’ll probably be disappointed,” he says. “At least I hope they are.” MIKAEL WOOD
